New A-Series Attenuators Support Compact RF Signal Chain Designs

Knowles’ new A-Series Attenuators deliver wideband RF attenuation in a compact, high-power package.

As RF systems operate across wider bandwidths and higher frequencies, signal-chain components must do more in less space. Designers need attenuators that provide precise, repeatable signal control while fitting into densely populated assemblies and performing reliably in demanding environments.

Knowles’ new ATT A-Series Attenuators are designed to meet these challenging requirements. The compact surface-mount family combines attenuation accuracy, wideband performance from DC to 20 GHz, and power handling in an industry-standard footprint.

Precise Signal Control Across the RF Chain

Attenuators play an important role in RF and microwave signal chains. They help align signal levels in multichannel systems, improve return loss, protect sensitive components, and optimize dynamic range. As systems become more complex, maintaining that control without adding size or compromising electrical performance becomes increasingly important.

The A-Series uses precision thin-film resistor technology on a ceramic substrate to deliver stable, repeatable attenuation across frequency, temperature, and environmental conditions. Standard attenuation values range from 0 dB to 20 dB, helping designers select the signal reduction needed for their application.

With 50-ohm matched RF inputs and outputs, the attenuators can integrate smoothly into RF signal chains while supporting the impedance matching needed to minimize unwanted reflections.

Designed for Space-Constrained Applications

The A-Series measures 0.080 in. x 0.065 in. x 0.012 in. (2.03 x 1.65 x 0.30 mm), providing a compact SMT-compatible option for assemblies where board space is limited. The product family supports power handling up to 6.5 W CW at 100 degrees C and an operating temperature range of -55 degrees C to +125 degrees C. This combination can help engineers address performance and reliability requirements in applications where components must operate under demanding thermal and environmental conditions.

The attenuators are well suited for a variety of applications including the following:

  • Radar systems
  • Electronically steered phased-array antennas
  • Electronic support measures systems
  • Transmit/receive modules
  • Wireless infrastructure
  • Satellite communications
  • RF test and measurement equipment

A Straightforward Upgrade Path

For many RF designers, improving signal-chain performance cannot require a complete PCB redesign. The A-Series is pin compatible with existing industry-standard chip attenuators, offering a practical path to expand bandwidth, improve power handling, or strengthen supply-chain resiliency while minimizing design changes.

The A-Series is available in standard attenuation values from 0 dB to 20 dB, with custom attenuation values, power ratings, and specialized configurations available through Knowles’ design-to-spec, full turnkey custom solutions. This flexibility enables engineers to evaluate a standard option first while retaining a path to a solution tailored to more specific electrical or mechanical requirements.
