IPDiA's Broadband Silicon Capacitor (BBSC) Product Line at 40 GHz

IPDiA's Broadband Silicon Capacitor (BBSC) Product Line at 40 GHz

The BBSC capacitor series from IPDiA provide superior broadband performance, stability and reliability for all broadband optoelectronics and high speed data systems. They provide broadband performances better than 0.4 dB of insertion loss up to 40 GHz, as well as very high stability of the capacitance over temperature (50 ppm/°C), voltage variation, and are highly reliable.

The BBSC capacitors have an extended operating temperature ranging from -55 to 150°C. The unique technology of integrated passive device in silicon, developed by IPDiA, offers unique performances with low insertion loss, low reflection and excellent phase stability from 16 kHz to 40 GHz:

• Ultra-low insertion loss < 0.4 dB up to 40 GHz;
• Flat frequency response;
• Excellent return loss > 16 dB;
• Resonance free and no phase discontinuity;
• Lower dielectric absorption (0.05%) compared with NP0/X7R;
• No AC distortion thanks to zero piezo effect;
• Excellent reliability exceeding X7R ceramics by a factor 10 (FIT);
• Reliable and repeatable performances obtained thanks to a fully controlled production line with high temperature curing (above 900°C) generating a highly pure oxide.

These broadband capacitors with ultra-deep trenches in silicon have been developed using a semiconductor process which enables the integration of trench MOS capacitors providing high capacitance value - for example, 100 nF in a 100 µm low profile 0402 SMT (P/N: 939.114.424.510) or 10 nF in a 100 µm low profile 0201 SMT (P/N: 939.114.423.410). Thanks to the adequate land pattern of the pads underneath the component, the impedance discontinuity of the transmission line can be mitigated. The BBSC series are compliant with standard JEDEC assembly rules, making the product fully compatible with high speed automated pick-and-place manufacturing operations. These capacitors are RoHS compliant and are available with either ENIG terminations or lead-free pre-bumped depending on the case size. The BBSC capacitors are suitable for DC blocking, coupling and bypass grounding applications in all optoelectronics/high-speed data, transimpedance amplifiers (TIA), receive-and-transmit optical sub-assembly (ROSA/TOSA), synchronous optical networking (SONET), as well as broadband test equipment and broadband microwave/millimeter-wave.

  • Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors vs. Film Capacitors

    The progress in semiconductor design sets the trend in current and future devices of power electronics: it manifests itself particularly in smaller dimensions, as well as in higher voltages and switching frequencies. Referring to intermediate circuit capacitors, this trend leads to aiming at higher energy densities and larger current loads, and – at the same time – decreasing space.

    Under these conditions, especially aluminum electrolytic capacitors and plastic film capacitors offer advantageous solutions. Jianghai has both technologies in the production program and this article gives an overview on the major differences between aluminum electrolytic capacitors and film capacitors.

  • Prudent use of electrolytic capacitors in vibrating applications

    The use of electrolytic capacitors in vibrating applications like motor controllers or power tools, must be considered very carefully regarding specific criteria.
    When you're designing electronic control applications or drives, you have to think about specifications like higher power and miniaturisation.
    If you're designing vibrating applications however, you should not forget to think about vibration resistance and temperature!

  • Miniaturization of HV applications: a solution for every Power Electronics Engineer

    StackiCap™ has been set to revolutionise the world of large, HV(200V – 2kV), X7R Multilayer Chip Capacitors (MLCCs)!

    It dramatically increases the max capacitance values within a size/voltage or can reduce chip sizes. They take up 1/10th of the current footprint dimension and save up to 9/10th of the weight of a stacked cap. The advantages are spectacular on any HV products where pcb space is at a premium and max. capacitance is required in a smaller footprint. Typical applications include power supplies, projector modules, lighting systems and throughout the aerospace sector.

  • IPDiA passive integration

    The electronic designs you are creating getting more and more complex. And at the same time footprints needs to be reduced and there are demands on stability that cannot be reached by using traditional passive components.
