CodecSys Video Streaming OTT

The business benefits of adopting CodecSys -CodecsysTM is a platform independent, software framework for video services that lowers bandwidth by 20% to 30% with a suite of intelligent video management services which include encoding, decoding, transcoding, compression, transmission and other services for both live broadcasting and file-based applications.

CodecSysTM is a high quality, software based, real-time encoding and transcoding solution that operates on industry standard IT hardware and delivers between 20% and 30% bandwidth reduction over single codec competitor solutions.

The current reality

Many manufacturers offer products that provide encoding functionality from a live SD or HD SDI video to IP streaming outputs (such as H.264) and/or transcoding functionality that converts stored files from high resolution file formats to streaming outputs. For real-time operation these products are usually hardware based, built on proprietary cards or units.

For slower than real-time applications there are software based solutions working on industry standard IT platforms. What they all have in common though is that they tend to use only one type of codec on a signal.

Despite some excellent codec development, these single codec encoder solutions will usually be really good at compressing a particular type of video signal, or they will provide the best compromise across different types of content. This is because the media content that is likely to be viewed on linear or on-demand services is likely to vary. Sometimes

the video will contain a presenter in a studio talking, another may contain fire or water, another action on grass, and there may be some content that is solid colour. But a codec optimised for talking heads, will not be optimised for a scene with fire, water, grass or solid colours.

The result is that either there are large peaks and troughs in the bandwidth of the streaming output as different scenes with different content are encoded or transcoded, or a high average bandwidth is delivered.

The CodecSys TM solution CodecSysTM from Broadcast International is a software based encoding and transcoding solution that operates on industry standard IT hardware. It uses a library of software codecs for which it knows what type of content each will provide optimal compression.

In real time each frame and scene of either live SD or HD SDI content, or a stored video file, is analysed by the CodecSysTM software. The best codec is then selected for the content type, and an optimally compressed encoded or transcoded package produced. Again in real-time, these optimally encoded packages are then put back together to form the IP streaming standard required, say H.264, which can be received by any device that displays that type of streaming—whether it is a network connected television, a desktop or laptop PC, a mobile phone, an iPad etc.

The result is a bandwidth reduction of typically about 20% to 30% compared to single codec solutions, with the bandwidth peaks and troughs normalised and a significantly improvement in peak signal to noise ratio.
